The DECERNIS™ Method

A disciplined system for turning information into intelligent decisions—and intelligent decisions into consistent execution.

Executive summary

DECERNIS™ is derived from the Latin decernere—to decide, determine, and resolve. The DECERNIS™ Method is a disciplined system for turning information into intelligent decisions and intelligent decisions into consistent execution.

Definition

What is DECERNIS™?

DECERNIS™ is a decision discipline. It treats decision-making as an operating system rather than a personality trait: a repeatable path from the signals an organization notices, through the knowledge and frameworks it maintains, to the decisions it makes, the execution that follows, and the learning it captures.

It is a methodology, a process, and the basis for a developing body of work—not a company brand. Mark Crawford remains the author and practitioner behind it.

Origin

Origin and meaning of the name

DECERNIS™ is derived from the Latin decernere—to decide, determine, and resolve. It is a coined name built from that root rather than a direct classical Latin word, chosen because decernere carries all three obligations of leadership: to decide, to determine what is true, and to resolve what is unfinished.

The problem

The core problem it solves

Organizations rarely fail because they lack information. They fail because information does not reliably become decisions, decisions do not reliably become execution, and execution does not reliably become learning.

The gap is structural, not intellectual. Smart teams re-litigate settled questions, escalate calls nobody owns, and repeat mistakes that were already paid for once. DECERNIS™ closes those seams deliberately.

Audience

Who it is for

Executives, operators, CFOs, boards, and investors accountable for consequential decisions made under complexity, ambiguity, and incomplete information—especially in organizations large enough that decision quality is a system property rather than an individual one.

Scope

Industry-agnostic by design

The method is industry-agnostic. Healthcare is an important source of examples and hard-won credibility, but it is not the boundary of the work. The same failure patterns show up wherever complexity, regulation, capital, and human judgment collide.

  • Healthcare
  • Finance
  • Private equity
  • Professional services
  • Technology
  • Manufacturing
  • Logistics
  • Government
  • Nonprofit
  • Other complex operating environments

The method

Signals → Knowledge → Frameworks → Decision Intelligence → Execution → Learning

Six stages, run as a loop. Weakness at any one stage caps the quality of everything downstream.

  1. 01What deserves attention

    Signals

Most organizations drown in inputs. The first discipline is deciding which signals are real, which are noise, and which change the shape of a decision.

  2. 02What we actually know

    Knowledge

Signals become knowledge only when they are captured, tested against evidence, and made reusable. Otherwise every decision starts from zero.

  3. 03How we reason repeatably

    Frameworks

Frameworks are the reusable reasoning of an organization: the questions asked, the thresholds applied, the trade-offs made explicit.

  4. 04Who decides, on what basis

    Decision Intelligence

Decision rights, decision logic, and the standard of evidence a call must survive—before it is made, not after it fails.

  5. 05How decisions become motion

    Execution

A decision that does not convert into owners, sequence, and cadence is only an opinion with a timestamp.

  6. 06How the system gets smarter

    Learning

Reviewing outcomes against the original logic is what turns a sequence of decisions into an operating capability.

In development

Current principles and emerging frameworks

  • The Decision Architecture Model

How executives design decisions instead of merely making them.

  • The AI-Native Operating Model

The operating model when AI is assumed, not added.

  • The Scale Fracture Framework

The four inflection points where organizations break, and the seven surfaces where they break along.

  • The Operating Cadence System

The calendar is the primary management tool.

  • The Governance Stack

Board, executive team, and operating leadership as one coherent governance system.

  • The Executive Leverage Framework

Five scarce resources every executive allocates, whether they know it or not.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the DECERNIS™ Method?
The DECERNIS™ Method is a disciplined system for turning information into intelligent decisions and intelligent decisions into consistent execution. It has six stages: Signals, Knowledge, Frameworks, Decision Intelligence, Execution, and Learning.
Where does the name DECERNIS™ come from?
DECERNIS™ is derived from the Latin verb decernere, meaning to decide, determine, and resolve. DECERNIS™ is a coined name derived from that root rather than a direct classical Latin word.
Which industries is DECERNIS™ for?
DECERNIS™ is industry-agnostic. It applies to any complex operating environment, including healthcare, finance, private equity, professional services, technology, manufacturing, logistics, and government. Healthcare is an important source of examples and credibility, not the boundary of the method.
Is DECERNIS™ a finished framework?
No. DECERNIS™ is an evolving body of work being developed and refined through operating experience, research, and field application. Principles and frameworks are published as they mature.
Who is the DECERNIS™ Method for?
Executives, operators, CFOs, boards, and investors who are accountable for decisions made under complexity, ambiguity, and incomplete information.
