Signal vs Noise

The discipline of separating inputs that change a decision from inputs that merely occupy attention.

The test for a signal is simple and rarely applied: if this number moved, which decision would change? Inputs that fail the test are noise regardless of how carefully they are produced.

AI has made noise cheaper to generate and more persuasive to read. Fluency now masquerades as evidence, which raises rather than lowers the required standard.

Signal discipline is subtractive work. Most organizations improve faster by removing inputs than by adding them.
