Operational Drag
The structural load — legacy process, redundant controls, and unmanaged complexity — that consumes capacity without producing outcomes.
Drag accumulates through good intentions. Each control, report, and coordination ritual was justified when introduced. None was ever retired.
The cost is not primarily financial. It is attention: the scarcest input to good judgment. An organization carrying heavy drag has little capacity left for the decisions that matter.
Removing drag requires the same rigour as adding it — an owner, a rationale, and a decision to stop.
